Anisha's Best of 2017
I have risen from the depths of graduate school to finally write an article for the website. It has been far too long. For this article, I will give my year in review/best of 2017 in the entertainment world. Let’s dive in.
So many games, movies, television shows, and albums came out this year, as is the norm (but I just got so overwhelmed with it all, to be honest). There were good things and bad things, but overall, I’d say it was yet another successful year for these industries (congrats I guess). Before I award my favorites in each category, I have to say, I was largely impressed by a lot of what 2017 introduced to the entertainment world. Thus, it was really difficult for me to come up with my best of 2017 awards. But, I finally came up with something for each, so here we go!
Best Video Game of 2017
This might come as a surprise to some of you, but my best video game of 2017 was Life is Strange: Before the Storm. I know, I know! Assassin’s Creed Origins didn’t make the cut! Before the Storm is not completed yet (in terms of the bonus episode)! What has the world come to????
First of all, chill. Second of all, Origins was a really great game. I even consider it to be my new favorite Assassin’s Creed game. But, with what Deck Nine has done with Before the Storm, to me, it’s as if Dontnod Entertainment still had a large role in the game. To me, Before the Storm really followed the twists and turns of the original game. It was just as emotional as its predecessor. I am in such awe of this game series. The amount of emotion put into these games is incredible. The games are very draining, but very rewarding too, in a way. In Before the Storm, I really felt as if I was living Chloe’s story. Few games have had that effect on me.
Best Movie of 2017
This was definitely the hardest one for me. I felt like I saw a million movies in 2017. But, the winner of this category is Dunkirk.
Christopher Nolan is my favorite film director of all time. I think his movies are absolutely incredible. Dunkirk was a turn in theme from his previous movies, going along the historical drama route this go around. To me, everything from this movie was awe-inspiring. The editing was smooth, the score was intense and complex, the acting was impressive. It was a really educational film. I enjoyed history classes in school, and I have an inclination towards documentaries and historical films. I think that this was Nolan’s best movie yet, and I hope all of the awards ceremonies give the film, and him, their due credit.
Best Television Show of 2017
For this category, I will be focusing on new television shows instead of recurring television shows. The winner for this category is Netflix’s Big Mouth.
I watched this show at the suggestion of one of my friends. He told me it was a short animated series about puberty; when I pressed for more, he just told me it was hilarious and that I should watch it. So, I listened to him and watched the show. He was right; it was hilarious. I really enjoyed the show, so much so that I was really upset when I reached the last episode because I felt that there was just so much more the show had yet to cover. Perhaps that’s why Netflix greenlighted a season 2 for it. It is full of really crude humor, but it’s not tacky or overdone. Big Mouth balances changing bodies and changing minds perfectly with its focus on seventh graders, loosely based on the creators of the show. If you haven’t checked out the show yet, I highly recommend it.
Best Album of 2017
There were many great albums that came out this year. And I do mean many. I mean, have you checked out the Grammy’s nominations yet? There are so many new artists and great albums from music alums. It was a pretty awesome year for music. My favorite album for 2017 though was Imagine Dragons’ Evolve.
Evolve featured many great songs that pumped me up. I really needed to be pumped up this year. From Thunder to Believer, this album really got me more into Imagine Dragons than I was before. Evolve is probably my favorite album by them now. It was slightly different from their previous two albums, but I highly enjoyed the direction they took with it. Take a listen to it if you haven’t already.
Well, that’s it for me. Hopefully, I can get a few more articles out for graduate school claims my soul again.
Until next time guys!
