Japanese animation, or anime, has a global following, and many of its most fervent fans have descended on Tampa this week.
MetroCon kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Tampa Convention Center, with an event line up featuring the best-known artists, voice actors, and musicians of the genre. The convention, which attracts lovers of video games, television shows and animated features of both English and Japanese origin, attracts thousands.
Last year, MetroCon reported more than 10,000 visitors. This year, the event stretches over four days for the first time to accommodate the crowds.
The convention encourages its attendees to dress up as characters from franchises, with event-sponsored competitions for those with the best costumes and designs.
